There is something to be said about having a week off before delving into Big Ten play.Thats how the schedule falls for Maryland first-year coach DJ Durkin, whose surprising Terrapins are idle this Saturday after opening 3-0.When Maryland returns, it will host Purdue on Oct. 1. Until then, Durkin plans to work on improving a squad that needed double overtime to get past Central Florida last weekend. The timing works out well for us, Durkin said Tuesday. We can rest up a few guys and, more than anything, continue to improve on work on areas we need to get better at as a team. There are plenty of those.Urban Meyer, coach of No. 2 Ohio State, also has Saturday off. He would prefer to build on the momentum created by a 3-0 start.Im one of those guys that kind of wish we could keep going, Meyer said. I wish (the bye) was a little later in the year, but I dont spend a whole lot of time thinking about it. So we got it, lets get healthy -- weve got a few guys banged up -- and lets get a little better.Having already finished the non-league portion of its schedule, No. 11 Wisconsin (3-0) jumps right into Big Ten play Saturday by traveling to eighth-ranked Michigan State (2-0) in the first meeting between the teams since 2012. Thats the schedule, so Badgers coach Paul Chyrst is just going to deal with it.This is what we have, its great, so find a way to make it work for your team, he said. The way the conference is faring this year, every week from here on out will be a challenge. The Big Ten currently has five teams in the Top 25 , four in the top 11.Weve always known theres great football played in the Big Ten, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said.Nebraska (3-0) jumped into the Top 25 after rallying to beat Oregon 35-32. Now ranked No. 20, the Cornhuskers hope to build on that comeback in a matchup against Northwestern (1-2) on Saturday. It was a great win for us at that particular time, Nebraska coach Mike Riley said. Well see how we can capitalize on that. The two other league games Saturday are Iowa (2-1) at Rutgers (2-1) and Penn State (2-1) at Michigan (3-0). Minnesota (2-0) is coming off a bye and wont start Big Ten play until next week. The Golden Gophers host Colorado State on Saturday.Given his choice, coach Tracy Claeys would have preferred to take a break in October or November.I try not to worry about things I cant control, but theres no question Id like to have it just past the middle of the year, Claeys said. But its better to have one early than to not have one at all.Other notes from around the Big Ten:STRONG ARMED ARMSTRONGNorthwestern has a tough task defensively Saturday against Nebraskas high-powered attack. The Cornhuskers have rung up 130 points, including 85 after halftime. Tommy Armstrong Jr. has run for four touchdowns and thrown for 685 yards and seven scores.Theyve been very explosive Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald said. I just believe that Tommy Armstrong is not only one of the best quarterbacks in the conference, but in the country. All he does is win.TAKING IT TO THE HOUSEA very young Penn State team has a difficult task at Michigan on Saturday, but coach James Franklin hopes his players will enjoy the experience of playing in the Big House.I think its fun, Franklin said. A historic program, a historic stadium. Thats why you come to play at a place like Penn State, to have these types of experiences. You embrace it, you look forward to it.The Nittany Lions stumbled against Pittsburgh before squeezing past Temple last week 34-27.Were getting better, Franklin said. We have 12 seniors total on our team. ... I think Michigan has 13 on their two-deep on offense and 13 on their two-deep on defense.TIME TO REGROUPA bye this weekend came at a perfect time for Illinois (1-2), which has much to do before taking on Nebraska on Oct. 1.We get to start over again, coach Lovie Smith said. We have an opportunity to go back to some training camp-type practices and work on cleaning up some of the things we continue to do that cost us games. Were going to look at all part of what weve been doing, whether it be changes in the lineup or some of the schemes.---This version of the story corrects Michigan State record to 2-0. Its the second straight game Bell has scored in extra time for Kelowna, which beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-5 on Friday, and he now has four game-winning goals on the season. Last year, the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot was run three weeks after the Breeders Cup Juvenile. That timing worked for Exaggerator, who wheeled back off a fourth in the Juvenile to win the Jackpot. This year, the Jackpot comes just two weeks after the Juvenile. It remains to be seen how this timing works out, but the Jackpot is still the marquee race of this weekend, followed by the Grade 3, $400,000 Delta Downs Princess, the main supporting event on a stakes-packed undercard. There is also a stakes-packed program at Laurel Park on Saturday, headed by the Grade 3, $250,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash.Delta Downs JackpotGunnevera is the only graded stakes winner this 10-horse field - he won the Grade 2 Saratoga Special two starts back - and is also the only one in this field to have competed in a Grade 1 event -- he finished fifth in Keenelands Breeders Futurity most recently -- and that will not be lost on the betting public. Moreover, Gunnevera will be reunited with Javier Castellano, who was aboard for the Saratoga Special score, and that will also conspire to drive down his odds.It will be no surprise if Gunnevera wins, but Im not featuring him. His big finish in the Saratoga Special was visually enhanced because pacesetter Recruiting Ready completely fell apart late. And while Gunnevera had been off two months and was stretching out to two turns for the first time in the Breeders Futurity, he was put to a heavy drive on the far turn and yet all he did was give a little ground.J Boys Echo is my play. I realize J Boys Echo is moving up significantly off a win at Keeneland over only maidens, and I know he must improve his Beyer Figures to contend here. But from what I saw in his recent score, Im confident he can handle both.J Boys Echo, a fast-closing second in his debut two starts back, stretched out to a route last time and was locked and loaded from virtually the start. Yes, he was fortunate to get through inside at the top of the stretch when the pacesetter ducked out sharply. But I was still impressed with the way J Boys Echo drew off late despite being barely asked.dddddddddddd He ran through the wire powerfully, like a colt who has much, much more to him, and Im anticipating a big move forward from him Saturday. We might have seen the start of a nice rivalry two weeks ago in the Juvenile between Classic Empire, trained by Mark Casse, and Not This Time, trained by Dale Romans. Romans also trains J Boys Echo, whose most dangerous challenger Saturday is, in my view, the Casse-trained Our Stormin Norman.Like J Boys Echo, Our Stormin Norman comes into this off a Keeneland maiden victory, showing dramatic improvement with blinkers on to score decisively and earn a field-best Beyer of 88.Delta Downs PrincessThere is a lot of early speed here, and I want a filly who can finish. That filly is Golden Mischief.Golden Mischief showed early foot in her first three starts, all losses. She adopted a closing approach in her fourth start, and has since won three straight, all in decisive fashion. Golden Mischiefs allowance win two back resulted in a field-best Beyer of 82. Her score most recently in the My Trusty Cat, the local prep for this race, was especially good. Golden Mischief was four wide on the first turn and three wide on the far turn, yet still won as much the best.De Francis DashX Y Jet was sensational early this year, but tired badly in the Vosburgh in his return from a knee chip, His trainer, Jorge Navarro, has won at a 31 percent clip this year and at 29 percent over the last five years, but has been relatively cold lately, going only 2 for 16 over the last 30 days.Stallwalkin Dude is the most logical alternative, but I question how strong a field he beat in the Bold Ruler last time, so Im going with Life in Shambles.Life in Shambless last three dirt performances were strong. He romped in the first two of those, and was second most recently after a bad trip that saw him steady at several points, putting him in a hole he couldnt quite escape. ' ' '
