BANGOR, Maine -- Mississippi States Victoria Vivians and Morgan William werent particularly effective in the season opener on Friday, so coach Vic Schaefer decided they should watch most of it from the bench. One night later, the Bulldogs two star guards werent going to be bystanders.Vivians poured in 26 points to lead No. 10 Mississippi State over Maine 87-43 on Saturday in the championship game of the Maine Tipoff Tournament. William added nine assists and five steals in a dominant effort on both ends of the floor.I knew two things were going to happen tonight -- I knew Morgan William and Victoria Vivians were going to play well, Schaefer said.Vivians, who led the Bulldogs in scoring last season, had a big game one night after being held to just four points. The 6-foot-1 junior made 9 of 19 shots from the field (47.4 percent), including four 3-pointers, and also added three steals.Just coming out fresh and knowing that we were playing a good team, it had me energized and ready to go, Vivians said.Mississippi State (2-0) routed its second straight opponent after beating Villanova 108-62 in the season opener. The Bulldogs jumped out a 15-0 lead in the first four minutes and cruised to a 46-23 halftime advantage.Maine (1-1) was led by Naira Carceres and Laia Sole, who both scored eight points. And tonight I thought we did a really good job of that.RARE HOME LOSSMaine had its 20-game home winning streak snapped. The Black Bears won 26 games last season, but lost eight seniors to graduation and are now in the midst of a rebuild.BIG PICTUREMississippi State: Vivians big game was a good sign for the Bulldogs, who will need her scoring throughout the season. Mississippi State would like to be a little more balanced this season, but theres no doubt Vivians will be asked to carry a large portion of the offensive burden.Maine: It was a tough night for the Black Bears, who fell into the early hole and could never recover. A critical 99-run partnership between Woakes and Adil Rashid for Englands ninth wicket had earned the tourists a first innings lead of 24, only for Bangladesh to make a blistering start to their second innings, reaching 152-2 with stumps imminent. However, Mahmudullahs wildly misjudged attempted sweep in what proved to be the final over of the day gave England a much-needed late boost. Chris Woakes innings of 46 was crucial in England earning a first innings lead It was [an interesting shot], I wouldnt have liked to be walking back into the dressing room having played that shot in the last over of the day, Woakes told Sky Sports. But it is what is; a big wicket for us and for Zafar on debut, were really pleased with the way hes bowled, in the second innings in particular. It lifts us in the dressing room going into tomorrow. We know we can knock these boys over, particularly if we get them four, five, six down, we can get into their tail quickly and they can fold. Fingers crossed that is what we can do in the morning. The hosts have already built up a lead of 128, but it could have been far greater given that England were struggling at 144-8 when Rashid joined Woakes at the crease during the morning session. Woakes and Adil Rashid put on 99 for Englands ninth wicket The pair showed great resolve and were rewarded as batting conditions improved against the older ball, enabling them to take England beyond Bangladeshs first innings total. It was a huge lift, Woakes added. When we came together, a lead wasnt looking possible at all so to geet ourselves in and get a lead was great.ddddddddddddThen it was annoying that I got out because I felt we could probably have got 20 or 25 more, and those runs feel like double. So that was frustrating but it was a great partnership and it put us ahead which was the main thing. Going into that position when were still plenty behind, its nice to put on a really important partnership, particularly towards the end when youve only got a couple of wickets left. They probably thought the job was done and it was nice to put on that partnership and put us ahead of them, just slightly. The longer you spend at the crease in these conditions, the easier it gets. We knew the ball was only going to get older and generally thats when it gets easier to bat as well, the pitch becomes a bit more consistent when the ball is a bit older. Zafar Ansari bowled Mahmudullah in the final over of the day to boost England So that was the plan, just try to get in, tick over, take the ones and then they try something different and you put the boundary balls away.Woakes admitted that England were frustrated by the rate at which they allowed Bangladesh to score their runs but feels that a chase of around 250 would not be beyond Alastair Cooks side.We got 240 in the first innings and so I think if we can get partnerships at the top of the order and through the middle then I feel we can chase anything weve scored already, so 250 maybe? Woakes said. Its an important morning for us tomorrow.Watch extended highlights of todays play on Sky Sports 2 at 5.30pm, followed by The Verdict on the same channel at 6.30pm.
