NAPA, Calif. -- Still relishing an emphatic U.S. Ryder Cup victory 10 days ago, Phil Mickelson is keen on playing on the 2018 team, even though he will be 48 when the matches are played in France. Its been 22 years since there have been 10 Americans that have been able to beat me [out to make the team], so I dont know why it would stop now, Mickelson said Wednesday at Silverado Resort, where he will play in the Safeway Open. I plan on being on the team in France and absolutely one of my goals is to play in France because Ive never been on a winning Ryder Cup team over in Europe. I want to win a Ryder Cup over there, and I want to be part of that as a player.Mickelson, 46, was 2-1-1 at Hazeltine, including a half-point against Sergio Garcia in which he made 10 birdies during their Sunday singles match. Over the past three Ryder Cups, Mickelson has gone 7-3-2, and he played a big role in helping reshape the U.S. approach after the loss two years ago at Gleneagles in Scotland. As a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup committee (along with Tiger Woods, the captain who replaces Davis Love III and three PGA of America officials), Mickelson will have a role regardless. He has made every U.S. Ryder Cup team -- never needing a captains pick -- dating to 1995.?The last time the U.S. won in Europe was in 1993. The 17-11 victory this year at Hazeltine was just the third victory in Mickelsons 11 appearances.Well, after a solid five days off, its exciting to start the year, Mickelson quipped, referring to the fact that the Safeway Open is the first tournament of the 2016-17 season. (Mickelson is not expected to play any other events this fall.)Im still on an emotional high from the Ryder Cup. Its been such a fun experiencee to share that with so many guys.dddddddddddd ... Guys have been texting all week long and staying in touch, and its really been an exciting thing to be a part of.Mickelson begins the new PGA Tour season looking for his first victory since the 2013 Open Championship. Although he had a couple of close calls, most notably his runner-up finish to Henrik Stenson?in July at The Open, Mickelson is keen on adding to his total of 42 PGA Tour victories. He is starting his 26th season. He said the Ryder Cup victory helped make up for not winning as an individual last season, especially given all the attention focused on him for having a big role in making changes to the U.S. Ryder Cup process. This has been something thats meant a lot to me to have the Ryder Cup team play well but also have some direction and continuity from year to year, he said. And to see that we had such early success was exciting. I didnt know how the first year was going to go, but Davis did such a great job in bringing everybody together. He was such a solid glue to all the people involved that it was fun to have such early success.Mickelson was scheduled to play with Woods during the first two rounds of the Safeway, a plan altered when Woods delayed his return to competitive golf Monday, withdrawing because he said his game is vulnerable and not where it needs to be.?We all want Tiger to come back, but we want him to come back when hes ready, Mickelson said. If he doesnt feel like hes ready, then he should wait. I understand theres a lot of pressure not just to come back but to perform when he does come back. ' ' '
