BALTIMORE -- Dustin Pedroias absence from the Boston Red Soxs lineup Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles was more than merely a case of giving the hard-charging second baseman a breather.Pedroia has been dealing with soreness in his left knee for more than a week, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell. And although Farrell said there is every intention that Pedroia will be able to play again by Wednesday night, he was given a night off to undergo treatment.Its a situation hes been managing since that series, Farrell said. After [Monday] night, though, there seemed there was a little more swelling in the knee and needed a day to recover.Pedroia is having his best season since at least 2011 in large part because he has stayed healthy. He started all but nine of the Red Soxs first 150 games, batting .325 with a .384 on-base percentage, 34 doubles, 13 home runs and an .836 OPS. Pedroia is third in the American League with 191 hits.Farrell said Pedroia injured his left knee while ranging for a ball up the middle and twisting to make a throw. While the injury has hampered Pedroia, he has not yet required an MRI exam, according to Farrell.After hitting better than .400 for most of the past month, Pedroia has five hits in 27 at-bats (.185) over the past six games.We were kind of targeting to get through this series and give him some downtime in Tampa, but we felt like today was going to be needed, Farrell said.
