MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin?outside linebacker Vince Biegel underwent surgery Thursday night to insert a screw into his cracked right foot and will miss the showdown Saturday with Michigan, the school confirmed Friday.?The Badgers said Biegel will be out several weeks.?I really hate any time a player has to miss time due to an injury, especially a senior like Vince, Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said. Vince has such a passion for football and loves playing the game. This team is very important to him and he is very important to our team. What you appreciate is that you know he will do everything in his power to get back on the field as soon as possible.?Biegels father, Rocky, had told ESPN.com on Thursday of his sons procedure.?Hes been playing on it for the last couple weeks, and it was bothering him a little bit, Rocky Biegel said. He had X-rays last night and confirmed it was cracked. He either plays on it, and then if he breaks it, then hes going to be out for eight weeks. Either way, hes got to have surgery on it. So he can keep playing until it breaks or try to go through the season with it and try to fix it. At any time, he could break it all the way through. It was just a crack and theyre just putting a screw in it. Its a very, very minor crack. The Badgers said?Vince Biegel discussed his options with?team physicians Wednesday and Thursday before deciding on surgery.?The news is a blow to No. 8 Wisconsin (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) ahead of a huge game against No. 4 Michigan (4-0, 1-0) in Ann Arbor. Earlier Thursday, the Badgers announced that they would be without kicker Rafael Gaglianone for the season due to a back injury.Biegel, Wisconsins most experienced player, has played in 46 games with 32 starts. He ranks seventh in program history with 18.5 career sacks and was a third-team all-Big Ten selection last season. Pro Football Focus graded Biegel as the top returning 3-4 outside linebacker against the run, as a pass-rusher and overall.?This season, Biegel has nine tackles with two quarterback hurries and a sack.Redshirt freshman Zack Baun was listed as Biegels backup on the depth chart this week. Baun has six tackles and two tackles for loss in 2016. Backup outside linebacker Garret Dooley also has six tackles.Wisconsin also could shift linebacker Jack Cichy from inside to outside and move backup Ryan Connelly?to starting inside linebacker. The Badgers began the season unranked and vaulted into the top 10 for the first time in five years after victories against No. 5 LSU and No. 8 Michigan State. It marks the first time Wisconsin had defeated two AP top-10 teams since 1962, but the schedule over the next four games is perhaps even more daunting.According to ESPN Stats & Information, Wisconsin is projected to play the toughest October schedule of any FBS team, with games against Michigan, No. 2 Ohio State, Iowa and No. 15 Nebraska. Those four teams are a combined 14-1 this season.Deonte Burton Thunder Jersey . -- The boos poured down on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots at the end of a horrible first half. He thrived when moved to the top line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski in the middle of the season and was a big reason behind San Joses postseason success.I wont even put a limit on him, general manager Doug Wilson said. He just gets better and better. Hes a big, strong guy. ... When we drafted him, we expected him to be a dominant player and so does he. He has high expectations for himself. He loves to play the game. You can see that smile on his face. Its contagious.Hertl got off to a fast start as a rookie in 2013-14, scoring 15 goals in 35 games before being sidelined by a knee injury. He returned late that season and struggled to regain that form in his second year as a pro.But after scoring just four goals in his first 37 games last season when he played both center and wing, Hertl surged when moved to the top line as a wing alongside Thornton and Pavelski. Hertl had 17 goals and 14 assists in the final 44 games and was productive in the playoffs as well with six goals and five assists in 20 games.Hertl injured his right knee late in Game 2 of the final against Pittsburgh and his absence the rest of the way played a role in San Joses six-game loss to the Penguins. The Sharks expect him to pick up where hee left off when next season starts.ddddddddddddWe think this guy is a high-end player, Wilson said. When you have that physical gift with the size and the hockey sense that he has. But he has this love of the game that all the top players have. Throw that combination together and we think hell be a great player. We really do. Big games and big situations he likes to step up. We missed him when he was out against Pittsburgh. Theres no doubt.Wilson said he expects to have conversations next summer with Hertl about a longer-term deal but both sides thought it was best to opt for a bridge contract because of Hertls potential to emerge into a star. He will be eligible to be a restricted free agent when this deal is done in 2018.Its good for me too because now I have two years to show my best hockey and show I can play longer here with the Sharks,, Hertl said. Its on me. Its better to sign the contract and well see the next two years how I play.Hertl said he is progressing well from the injury suffered in the final and will not need surgery. He said he expects to be 100 percent by the time the season starts but is not sure if he will be healthy enough to play for his native Czech Republic in the World Cup in September.Wilson said he is having talks with two other pending restricted free agents: forward Matt Nieto and defenseman Dylan DeMelo. Wilson previously said he will let pending unrestricted free agents Roman Polak, Nick Spaling, James Reimer and Dainius Zubrus hit the market on Friday. ' ' '
