United States captain Davis Love III remains hopeful that Tiger Woods can make the American team to face Europe in the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in September.Woods has been named as one of Loves vice-captains for the tournament - alongside Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker - but he could make history by also featuring as one of the 12 USA players if he proves his fitness. The 14-time major winner has not competed since undergoing two procedures on his back in September and October last year. However, he fuelled speculation about a comeback after registering for the US Open in June, before playing five holes with friend Mark OMeara at Bluejack National Golf Club in Texas on Monday. Woods (left) is aiming to be selected for the Ryder Cup by Davis Love III (right) Love said: [Tiger] keeps telling me I am going to be the first playing assistant captain. He wants to be on the team playing, not driving a golf cart, so I expect if he gets healthy hes going to make a good run for it. I wouldnt bet against Tiger Woods in anything. If he can get out and play 10 or 15 tournaments - which will be a lot after what he has been through - I think he can make the team, and we would love to have him. If everybody on the team says we want Tiger Woods, you dont go without him. If everybody on the team says I dont know, I think hes hurt, you know the group will make the decision. But Tiger, I think at this point in his career, he knows what he is capable of. He will come and say my backs not ready, Im not going to make it, or he will come and say Im ready to go if you want me.Former world No 1 Woods has played in seven Ryder Cups but the United States have won only one of those seven, while his individual record is mixed with only 13 wins in his 33 matches. Woods has registered for the US Open Despite that sketchy record, Love remains eager to have the 40-year-old on board at Hazeltine as either just a vice-captain or as a member of the team as the US look to win back the trophy from Europe. He said: Tiger Woods is the captain on the course. He can be a leader - we need Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods types.I want him on the team either way because hes a great influence. He obviously brings a lot of incredible passion to our team and confidence. He may have registered for the US Open but Tiger Woods still doesnt know when hell be back playing competitive golf again. Tiger doesnt have to be in the top eight or 10 in the points to make the team. He just needs to be playing and playing well and he will know - as an assistant captain I guess he will get a vote - if hes ready. We will know if hes ready and wed love to have him because he brings an aura with him to our team, that we really need. The preseason conference freshman of the year, Alterique Gilbert, joins Jalen Adams, who received the same honor last year, and Purvis.Purvis, who averaged just under 13 points a game last season, said he believes there will be many times when all three guards will be on the court at once.We dont have positions, Purvis said. Once we get in the flow of the game and coach gets to throwing different lineups out there, your position dont really matter. The Huskies could also go big, with the 6-foot-8 Larrier at small forward, joining 6-10 Facey or 6-11 sophomore Steven Enoch and the 7-foot shot blocker Brimah down low.Freshmen Christian Vital, Vance Jackson, Mamadou Diarra and Juwan Durham are also expected to compete for playing time. Here are some other things to watch for as the Huskies defend their conference championship:OUT OF CONFERENCE TESTSThe early season includes a trip to the Maui Invitational, with first--round opponent Oklahoma State and North Carolina on the Huskies side of the bracket.dddddddddddd. Oregon, Tennessee, Georgetown and Wisconsin are on the other side. UConn also faces out-of-conference games with Syracuse, Ohio State and Auburn in November and December before visiting the Hoyas in January.GROWING RIVALRY:The Huskies have been picked by the leagues coaches to finish second behind Cincinnati. UConn beat the Bearcats in the conference tournament last season with the help of Adams, who sent the game into a fourth overtime with a 3-pointer from well beyond half court at the buzzer . The rivals wont play until Feb. 4 in Ohio and close the season against each other on March 5 at Gampel Pavilion.NUMBER CHANGE:Rodney Purvis has changed his number from 44 to 15 following the death of a close friend. Tryek Coger, who lived for a time with the Purvis family in North Carolina, was planning to wear the number 15 this season for Oklahoma State. The guard died after a July workout of an undiagnosed heart condition. The two were to meet on the court in November at the Maui Invitational.ARMENIAN STAR?Enoch spent part of the summer playing for the Armenian national team. The Norwalk native has no Armenian ancestry, and had never been overseas before this summer. He received dual citizenship in order to play at the FIBA Under-20 Division B European Championships, were he averaged 17.2 points and 15.3 rebounds in six games.BRIMAHS BACKBrimah, UConns center, played just 25 games last season because of injuries. But he still managed to black 67 shots, giving him 280 for his career. That is third in program history behind Emeka Okafors 441 and Hasheem Thabeets 417. Brimah also shot 66 percent from the floor last season, in large part because of his ability to catch and dunk lob passes. ' ' '
