- Luger Armin Zoegeler (Italy) and speed skater Claudia Pechstein (Germany) both have a chance to set a new record by winning medals in a sixth Olympic Winter Games.
- Pechstein can also become the first athlete to win a gold medal in five different editions of the Olympic Winter Games.
- Luger Albert Demchenko (Russia) and ski jumper Noriaki Kasai (Japan) will participate in a record seventh Olympic Winter Games.
- Seven NOCs will participate for the first time at the Olympic Winter Games: Dominica Marvin Jones Jr Hat , Malta, Paraguay, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tonga and Zimbabwe.
