Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss Roberto Luongo and the Canucks, the Raptors Jonas Valanciunas, the World Cup in Qatar, and the action of Bostons David Ortiz. Bruce Arthur, National Post: My thumb is up to Roberto Luongo who is reportedly going to report to training camp with the Vancouver Canucks in the fall - which wasnt always a sure thing and you can hardly blame him. Its been a long and trying emotional journey for Luongo, from the 2010 gold medal final in Vancouver to the 2011 Stanley Cup final where he lost to a guy who two years later was living in a cabin in the woods, to the on-again, off-again, will they trade him, will they not, lose his job to Corey Schneider, be promised that he will be traded and then eventually come back as the goaltender for the Vancouver Canucks. Really, its good that hes coming back. Maybe he can even be great again, maybe elite. Wouldnt that be fantastic? Because frankly, Ive got to be honest, we kind of need a goaltender for Sochi. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is up to Jonas Valanciunas of the Toronto Raptors, the MVP of the NBAs Summer League. Now I know its not a big deal to be the MVP of the NBAs Summer League - because he played only four games to get the nod - but if you look at who has won this in the past: Damon Lillard, John Wall, Blake Griffin. Some of the best young players in the NBA have won this award, so maybe this is good news for a Toronto Raptors franchise that frankly needs some good news. Normally in the Summer League what you find out is who cant play, in this case maybe the Raptors found out who can. Cathal Kelly, Toronto Star: My thumb is down to FIFA - talk about something that you could say every week. This past week they confirmed what everybody already knew - that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar cannot be played in the summer and must be moved to the winter. In Qatar on a summer day the temperature reaches as high as 50 degrees celsius. First they worried about the players but now it became clear that a bunch of fans were going to die at this thing so they have moved it to the winter. It is an untenable situation for the worlds professional leagues - this will roil world football for a decade to come. Yet the lesson that should be drawn - that we need change at the top - probably goes missed. Dave Hodge, TSN: My thumb is down to Big Papi, David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox, and Ill let the video of his violent meltdown in Baltimore on Saturday night say the rest. This is bad enough that we shouldnt even laugh, should we? He had a reason to be mad on a horrible strike being called on a high pitch, but you cant react that way and you wonder if Major League Baseball will react to what Ortiz did because that video is being seen everywhere that baseball highlights are being shown.Basketball Shoes From China .B. - Sebastien Auger made 44 saves as the Saint John Sea Dogs edged the visiting Acadie-Bathurst Titan 2-1 on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. He spent one disappointing season with the Cowboys, and the Jaguars are aware of problems he caused in Dallas, including a sideline outburst during an Oct. 25 game.Hardy missed almost all of the 2014 season while on the commissioners exempt list after a conviction for domestic violence, which was later thrown out.Jacksonville general manager Dave Caldwell said Monday that his team didnt intend to sign Hardy after his two-day workout Wednesday and Thursday, but wanted to see him on the field and meet with him so the Jaguarss would have enough information about the free-agent defensive end should they decide to pursue him in the future.ddddddddddddIt was really to find out more about him so we dont have any questions going into the season, Caldwell said. Theres no what-ifs for us right now. There could have been a what-if Week 3, Week 4 or into the preseason, but we kind of have our questions answered as to our game plan for him.It was an opportunity for us -- heres a guy that was a franchise defensive end two years ago sitting out on the street -- to bring him in, work him out and try to find out the facts where hes at, the truth behind everything that surrounds him and just do our homework. The Redskins have the advantage of Normans perspective should they reach the point of soliciting his opinion.Hardy, who will turn 28 on Thursday, has 40 career sacks, including 11 in 2012 and 15 in 2013.
