Cleveland Browns starting defensive end Desmond Bryant is likely to miss the 2016 season after undergoing surgery Tuesday to repair a torn pectoral muscle, the team announced.Bryant, 30, suffered the injury late last week while lifting weights,?a source told ESPNs Adam Caplan. The expected recovery time after the surgery is five to six months.First off, thank you to all the fans, friends, and family who have reached out expressing their well wishes in response to the news of my injury, Bryant said in a statement released by the team. While Im frustrated and disappointed about having to miss some time out there with my teammates, I take comfort in knowing that preparations have already begun for an epic return. An eight-year veteran, Bryant led the Browns with a career-high six sacks last season and has started all 41 games he has appeared in over three seasons with Cleveland.Bryant recorded 33 tackles and a forced fumble in 14 games last season, missing Weeks 3 and 4 with a shoulder injury.?We feel awful for Des, Browns coach Hue Jackson said. This is a young man that worked extremely hard this offseason to prepare himself for the 2016 season. He really bought in to our coaching, our team-over-self philosophy, and was intent on becoming a leader for our team.Ray [Horton] and the defensive staff were expecting a really productive season from him. We all understand that injuries are part of this profession, and as a team you have to find a way to overcome them. There is no doubt that we will miss Des this season, and we all wish him a speedy recovery. The Browns, who ranked fifth-worst in the NFL with 29 sacks in 2015, will already be without pass-rusher Armonty Bryant to start the season. Bryant was suspended four games for violating the NFLs policy on performance-enhancing substances. The scientists believe the small earthquake during a Marshawn Lynch touchdown was likely greater than Lynchs famous "beast quake" touchdown run three years ago, which also came against New Orleans during a playoff game. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Drew Brees age might be a sticking point in his contract negotiations with the New Orleans Saints. But the 37-year-old quarterback insisted Thursday that he can keep playing at a high level into his 40s, without question.I dont see any reason why I cant play at the highest level for the next five years. Minimum, Brees said.Listen, Im not na?ve and Im not looking five years from now. Im really looking at each and every year understanding I gotta prove it. I gotta prove that Im the best guy to lead this team. But, yeah, Brees said. I mean, it doesnt get any easier. But I feel like with my training regimen and with the people I have around me and the things that were doing to put myself in the best position to succeed ... I dont see any reason why I cant do this beyond five years from now.I want to step away from this game when Im ready to step away from this game. Not because somebody tells me I cant play or because my level of play has fallen off. I have a goal in mind, (but) Im gonna keep that to myself.Brees wasnt directly talking about his next contract extension when he made those comments. The two topics, however, are related because he is heading into the final year of his current deal -- and the amount of guaranteed money in his next contract could be one of the greatest sticking points.Brees and Saints general manager Mickey Loomis both acknowledged this week that talks havent progressed in months. Brees reiterated Thursday that he wont discuss his contract during the regular season, so, if theres a time to do it, certainly now would be the time. When asked if he feels like this should be easier, based on his years of service and relationship with the organization, Brees said, Uh, I would hope so and laughed. But I also know sometimes these things take time, said Brees, who stressed, Just to clarify, nothing is adversarial. Ive got a great relationship with Mickey Loomis and have for my entire time here. And this is just that part of the business, lets call it.Brees also insisted it wont be a distraction -- especially noow that the Saints are back on the practice field, having completed their first training camp practice on Thursday.ddddddddddddHonestly, thats really the last thing on my mind, Brees said. Im all about football, Im all about getting myself and this team ready to have a great season. And I think that will take care of itself when the time comes. But as for now, Im just focused on training camp.Brees said he also doesnt believe it will be a distraction for any of his teammates.Only if you guys make it a big deal, Brees told the media with another big laugh. I think we all have enough on our mind and on our plate right now in regards to making this team and filling a role and just watching this whole thing come together right now. I think everybodys excited about that. When you get to camp, you shouldnt be worried about a contract situation. You should be worried about football and, How do I get the best out of myself and the team?Naturally, all of Brees teammates who were asked if they pay any attention to his contract talks said no on Thursday. Veteran right tackle Zach Strief insisted theyre not lying -- both because they have other things to worry about and because theyre confident in Brees ability to compartmentalize.Look, hes a highly competitive and highly professional guy that is way more worried about the fact he threw an interception in seven-on-seven than he is about a contract right now, Strief said. And thats just how Drew is. Like, to a fault, hes like focused in everything. Everything he does is unbelievably focused.Hes like a weirdo. So I dont have any doubt that Drew cant put that out of his brain while were playing and practicing, and thats whats important. He knows the offense better than anybody in the building, hands down. And I would include coaches in that. I think Drew has a better handle on it than everybody at this point. And, look, I dont care if its a distraction for Mickey Loomis. Hes doing fine, Im sure. ' ' '
