Cleveland have confirmed that Johnny Manziel has been released - Alex Ferguson looks at whats gone wrong for Johnny Football. After a Heisman Trophy season with Texas A&M - including an extraordinary performance in a win over Alabama on the road - Johnny Manziel had the world at his feet. People couldnt get their eyes and ears away from the cocksure quarterback. He was bigger than most stars in the NFL, and was wowing the football world with his movement, his escape from the pocket and his God-given talent for winning games. But then the rot set in. In January 2013 he was photographed signing helmets - and getting paid for them - something thats illegal within the rules of college football. He got away with only a one-half game suspension (St Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley did the same thing in 2014 for Georgia, and was banned for four games), and then made a gesture at an opposing player, which irked his head coach. Although 2013 did not live up to 2012, Johnny Manziel was still the most heralded name in the 2014 NFL Draft. Wait until you see Johnny Manziel, I told everyone who would listen. Maybe I should have added: Youll see him in any club near you.But unfortunately, it was his partying career that led the way even before he touched the grass of Clevelands practice facilities. Before he arrived in Cleveland, there were multiple photos of him in party mode and on his first day, along with other rookies, Manziel came in late for training camp, blaming a timing issue. His life was already becoming - as they say in recovery circles - unmanageable. Most people would have checked the schedule and arrived early. Especially if they are paid millions of dollars. As highlighted by SportingNews.com in a list of Manziel incidents, other problems began to mount. He was fined $12,000 in only his second pre-season game for swearing. In November 2014, Manziel and his entourage were allegedly involved in a fight at a Cleveland apartment building, where police were called and a fan later apologised (Manziel was not arrested or fined by the NFL over the incident). Manziel was also seen appearing to swear at NBA officials from the front seats of NBA games involving the Cleveland Cavaliers.Manziel tried the contrition tack in an effort to right the yacht: Its about action, he said. Its about being accountable and doing what Im gonna say, instead of looking like a jackass. Either Im going to learn or Im going to be finding something else to do.Photographs of Manziel in a Miami club appeared 12 hours later. An ESPN report looking into Manziels first-year career said about those interviewed: Those who spoke talked of a year-long pattern that showed a lack of commitment and preparation, a failure to be ready when given a chance in his first start against Cincinnati and a continued commitment to nightlife, which affected his preparation and work while in the team facility. In the off-season of 2015, Manziel took a step forward in his life and decided to go to rehab for three months (or 90 days, in recovery speak). Either he was forced by the Browns, the NFL and his family, or he decided himself. Either way, it was a good idea. This writer has seen many people get sober through rehab, but also a lot who havent. So naturally, I said a prayer for Johnny Football and hoped hed be in the former category.Manziel was reportedly back out drinking in less than six months.Manziel started the season with much improvement, striking a relationship with Travis Benjamin and generally looking a step towards the Johnny Manziel that football fans had known and loved. But off the field, the train was getting worse. Manziel was pulled over by police after getting in an argument with then-girlfriend Colleen Crowley. No charges were made, although at the time Manziel had admitted the pair had been drinking before subsequently refuting that claim. Then, another photograph emerged of Manziel appearing to be drunk (probably not the best look during the season) during Clevelands bye week. Manziel tried to explain himself, denying drinking but it was the off-the-field incidents that really angered coach Mike Pettine: It goes well beyond the field. We are going to continue to support him in every way possible, but at this point, weve decided its best to go with [Josh McCown] as the starter going forward.Pettine was fired at the end of last season, and new coach Hue Jackson was rumoured to immediately want rid of Manziel - and that departure has now been confirmed. Staying or not, the clouds darken for the player. Theres an accusation that he assaulted Crowley in January. No charges or arrests have been been made but she has put a protective order against him, which was not fought. Manziel has denied anything happened, and has said everythings fine.Remember this: Alcoholics always think they are OK….until they really arent. I know about alcohol problems because Ive been in AA for 15 years. And kept sober. Manziel is terrifying his family. His father, Paul is worried Johnny wont live much longer after his son refused another stint in rehab (he was offered stays at two places), according to his interview with the Dallas Morning News. I truly believe if they cant get him help, he wont live to see his 24th birthday, he said. Manziel has insisted that he is fine.Lets hope he does. But right now, Manziels playing with his career, his future, and very probably - his life. He needs to sort things out.If he doesnt, Johnny Football will be the next Ryan Leaf. RIO DE JANEIRO -- After a 12-year professional boxing career, Hassan NDam dreamed of returning to the Olympics and winning the gold medal that eluded him in Athens.Instead, NDam is headed home with a bitter lesson in the amateur version of his sport.NDam was ousted in his opening bout in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night, losing a unanimous decision to Brazils Michel Borges. The 32-year-old NDam, who held versions of two pro middleweight titles, is the biggest name among the three professional boxers who joined the Rio field earlier this summer. Although the French-Cameroonian veteran appeared to land cleaner shots in the final two rounds, Borges got the decision in his hometown with a quick start and the wild support of a crowd that roared for his every punch.Im very disappointed about this, NDam said. Hes a good fighter, but I think Im better than him. I took too much time to come into the fight, but I lost the fight.NDams stunning loss buried any fears of an Olympic tournament dominated by professionals in Rio.Lightweight Carmine Tommasone, who has never fought professionally outside of his native Italy, became the first pro boxer to win an Olympic fight in the morning session at Riocentro Pavilion 6, beating Mexicos Lindolfo Delgado.Thailand lightweight Amnat Ruenroeng, the third pro in the field, fights Sunday. When the International Boxing Association (AIBA) decided earlier this year to allow any boxer to attempt to qualify for the Olympics, many observers condemned the move, envisioning a bizarre event with elite prizefighters seriously hurting teenage amateurs. But every big-name boxer in the world passed on Rio, citing everything from injury worries to the Olympic-style sports peculiar demands in a multi-fight tournament featuring daily weigh-ins and three-round bouts. The last factor doomed NDam, who acknowledged feeling out his opponent in an inactive first round. In the pros, thats a smart strategy. In the amateur game, the fight is already one-thirdd over.ddddddddddddI did it too slow, NDam said. Im not happy. I came too far for this competition. I took too much time from my professional career. I have no regrets, but I took too long to get into the fight.NDam had hoped to better his performance in the loaded Olympic middleweight tournament in 2004, when the amateur game still used the now-discarded punch-counting system to determine winners. NDam beat future Irish world middleweight champion Andy Lee, but lost a decision to Russias Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov, who went on to beat Gennady Golovkin for the middleweight gold medal in Athens. Many boxing experts predicted wild mismatches when pros joined the Olympic qualification process this summer -- and perhaps it would have happened if the likes of Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez had signed up.But the amateur game presents challenges that can be just as problematic as a Wladimir Klitschko jab.Its very different, Tommasone said. I (had to adjust) for a three-round Olympic fight. I usually prepare for a 10-round, 12-round (fight). I had to win the match with intelligence. The 32-year-old Tommasone thoroughly controlled his first Olympic fight, trouncing the 21-year-old Delgado with activity and precision. Tommasone fights as a 126-pound professional featherweight, but chose the 132-pound lightweight division for the Olympics, likely making it easier to deal with daily weigh-ins.Tommasone, nicknamed Mr. Wolf after Harvey Keitels problem-solving character in Pulp Fiction, barely missed qualification for the Beijing Games. He eagerly seized the Italian federations invitation to qualify last month in Venezuela. The Olympics are a dream for every athlete, and for me, it is wonderful, Tommasone said. When I learned that I could qualify, I wanted to do it immediately. It was my dream.---Online:AP Summer Games website: http://summergames.ap.org/ ' ' '
