PITTSBURGH -- Pirates rookie Josh Bell came up big again Sunday, but it wasnt enough this time.Bells baserunning helped Pittsburgh tie the score in the seventh, before Kris Bryants RBI double in the eighth lifted the Chicago Cubs to a 6-5 victory over the Pirates on Sunday. The Pirates tied the score at 5-5 after the Cubs failed to turn a double play off a dribbler from Starling Marte in the seventh. With Bell, who led off the inning with a walk, at second base and John Jaso at first, Marte grounded to shortstop Addison Russell as Bell ran back to second.Russell didnt tag Bell and instead handed off to second baseman Ben Zobrist, whose relay throw to first failed to beat Marte. First baseman Anthony Rizzo threw back across the diamond to third, where Bell avoided a tag from Javier Baez.Today, (Bell) made a very good baserunning play to throw it in reverse and to stay out of the tag, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. Then he was able to restart it and get to third base, that was very good baseball awareness and a very good play there. With runners on the corners and one out, Andrew McCutchen drove in Bell with a fly to deep right field. Reliever Pedro Strop ended the inning by getting David Freese on a fly ball.Bell, called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, went 2-for-2 and reached base in each of his three pinch-hit at-bats during the weekend series. He singled off Cubs ace Jake Arrieta in his first career at-bat Friday and hit his first grand slam in the fifth inning Saturday.Im not sure he could have a better three at-bats, just based on what was out there for those at-bats, Hurdle said. Today, a lead-off at-bat against a guy thats an experienced guy, to stretch that out, it was good to see. He checked all the boxes we had for him when we called him up. It was to help as a bat off the bench and help us win some games.Pinch-hitter Matt Szczur doubled to left field with one out in the eighth against Pirates reliever Tony Watson (1-3). Bryant, who had three hits and reached base four times, followed with his tiebreaking hit to put the Cubs back ahead.I just go out and try to make something happen, Szczur said. I was able to get a good pitch to drive and (Bryant) did the rest. . Weve been grinding, were a bunch of grinders, so that was a good way to end the first half. We feel good about ourselves.Chicago avoided a series sweep ended its five game losing streak. Pittsburgh lost for just the second time in 11 games heading to the All-Star break. With the win, the Cubs carry a seven-game lead over the second-place St. Louis Cardinals into the break. We need a break, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. We need to get guys rested. The combination of the schedule and, more specifically, the last week with the way games were scheduled, it put us in a fatigue situation. After Strop (2-2) gave up McCutchens tying sacrifice fly in the seventh, Carl Edwards pitched a hitless eighth and Hector Rondon got the last three outs for his 14th save.Strop had come in for starter John Lackey, who had another inconsistent outing. After allowing four runs in his first three innings, which included McCutchens 14th home run of the season and his second in two days, Lackey rebounded by shutting down the Pirates through the following three innings.Lackey lost his control again when he walked Bell and allowed Jaso to follow with a single to start the seventh inning.Pirates starter Jonathan Niese fared worse, giving up five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. He was pulled in favor of Arquimedes Caminero in the fourth inning after surrendering a two-run home run to Albert Almora Jr., retiring the following two batters and allowing back-to-back hits to Bryant and Rizzo in top of the fourth inning.Niese has lost five of his past six starts and is 7-7 after beginning the season 6-2.TRAINERS ROOMCubs: OF Dexter Fowler will miss the All-Star Game on Tuesday and likely some time following the break. Before the series started Australia had identified AB de Villiers as the man to keep in check but with news that he will be sidelined for the next two months, they have had to turn their attention elsewhere. Now, they have earmarked Dale Steyn as the South African who will pose the biggest threat especially as they know he was recently wounded in the ODI format.Hes a class bowler and has been for a long time, Steven Smith, Australias captain, said. I watched the Test series against New Zealand, where he was almost back to his best. I think hes been left out of their one-day side for a while, so hes probably out to prove a point.Officially, Steyn was rested from the triangular series, which also featured Australia, in the Caribbean in June. But he was allowed to play in Englands Natwest T20 Blast so, unofficially, he was left out. Steyn admitted as much during the New Zealand Tests in August. I cant even make the one-day team now, Steyn said, after he had surged back with eight wickets in the Centurion Test. That was Steyns first completed Test in more than 18 months, after he was forced out of six of South Africas eight matches in the 2015-16 season with injuries that he picked up in the other two. But last month Steyn showed signs of old when he bowled at good pace and swung the ball to finish as the series leading wicket-taker. Now, at the same venue, Steyn will make his comeback to the 50-over team and stand-in captain Faf du Plessis is certain he will want to do just as well.Dales personality sometimes is a bit cranky, thats why you see that fire when he gets a wicket and thats why we love him like that, du Plessis said. I think when he came back, felt like he needed to prove a point. He is the No. 1 bowler in the world. If you dont produce the goods regularly, people are going to ask questions and that comes with its own pressures. Now he is back in the one-day team and he will try and make a huge impact and try and show everyone that one-day cricket is still a big part of his future.Steyn has said winning an ICC trophy remains a goal of his and, with the Champions Trophy nine months away, it is within reach. He is expected to play in several ODIs before that - after this series South Africa host Sri Lanka and then go to New Zealand - and du Plessis hopes the mere prospect of Steyn will work to South Africas advantage. The fear that he puts into opposition, just the name itself - you only have a few guys around the world who can do that, du Plessis said. His skill and experiencce is something you cant get overnight.dddddddddddd If Dale is fit and 100% and wants to bowl quick, he is an extremely big asset.Perhaps more worryingly for the opposition is that the make-up of South Africas team, which will now include at least two allrounders, means Steyn can be deployed slightly differently. Instead of merely seeing off Steyns opening spell, they may have to contend with him for longer up front because South Africa have several other bowling options to use mid-innings and at the death. If Dale is bowling well, he can bowl six or seven up front to try and strike whereas in the past, if any one of your opening two bowlers had to bowl more than four overs you are taking those overs out of at the end of the game, du Plessis said.Kagiso Rabada has emerged as one of the candidates who can operate at the end of the innings while Andile Phehlukwayo, who debuted against Ireland, is another. Kyle Abbott is a third. Then South Africa have Wayne Parnell and Dwaine Pretorius to operate in the middle period along with the spinner and JP Duminy, taking the number of bowlers in their team to seven. It is a balance du Plessis wants applied in the long term, especially as the allrounders develop. Once you have a six and a seventh bowler in the team, its great for a captain. Weve got Wayne, Andile and Dwaine. Between the three of them, at least two can put their hands up and really become good one-day cricketers for South Africa, he said. Weve been lacking that and so always when we were picking a team, the side was unbalanced. We were either one batsman short or one bowler short. I am hoping two of them will step up in this series.Du Plessis aims for whoever makes the allrounder spot their own is that they will contribute as much with the bat as with the ball, especially because South Africa are also looking to combat another problem: slow scoring rates in the middle overs. The 25-40 over period is where South Africa have sometimes let the game drift but with power-hitting allrounders, du Plessis hopes that will change. Most of the time, weve only had six batsmen and that makes you a little hesitant when you come to those overs, he said. You cant lose wickets because your tail starts at seven or eight and goes down to eleven, so you have to sit a little bit in those periods. With us having a longer batting line-up now it allows us to push a bit harder. ' ' '
